José Rodríguez es Ingeniero Civil Electricista (U. Federico Santa María, Chile, 1977) y Doktor Ingenieur (U. de Erlangen, Alemania Federal, 2985).
Su área de investigación es la Electrónica de Potencia y el control de máquinas eléctricas, con aplicación en energías renovables y electromovilidad. Es autor de más de 500 publicaciones, 200 de ellas en revistas de corriente principal.
Ha sido Rector de las universidades Federico Santa María y Andrés Bello de Chile. Fue investigador fundador del Centro Científico y Tecnológico de Valparaíso (CCTVAL) y director fundador del Advanced Center for Electrical and Electronic Engineering (AC3E), dos centros de excelencia en investigación. Es Fellow del IEEE. Desde el año 2014 ha sido en la lista de Highly Cited Researchers de Web of Science, que reconoce a los investigadores más influyentes del mundo. El año 2014 recibió el Premio Nacional de Ciencias Aplicadas y Tecnológicas, otorgado por el gobierno de Chile.
